How We Work
Every project, restored or new, follows the same four steps. No surprises, no shortcuts.
Consultation
We visit your home or site, assess the piece or the space, and talk through what you want the finished result to feel like.
Design
You get sketches, wood options, and a quote before a single piece of timber is cut.
Craft
The work happens in the workshop, with traditional joinery and finishes applied by hand.
Install
We deliver, fit, and finish on site — and we check back after a season to make sure everything has settled well.
About AR Projects Oy
AR Projects Oy is a Helsinki-based woodworking company founded in 2016. We work with traditional woodworking, restoration and bespoke joinery, combining established techniques with a practical understanding of how things were originally made — and how they should be repaired or built today.
Much of our work involves old windows, doors and furniture where preserving the original character matters. We repair what can be repaired, reproduce what needs replacing, and use materials and methods that are appropriate for the piece and its history. The same principles guide our new work: sound construction, carefully considered details and craftsmanship that is meant to last.
Working with old buildings and objects requires more than simply making them look new again. Their materials, construction and traces of age are part of what gives them character. Our approach is to preserve that character while restoring the function and integrity of the original work.
Whether restoring something that has already served for generations or creating something entirely new, we approach the work with the same standard: understand it, make it properly, and make it last.

Arne Rannaoja
Founder & Carpenter
"I've spent most of my life around wood — it's the most honest material there is. When a piece is done right, it doesn't just survive the years. It earns them."

The restoration of our old windows turned out beautifully. It’s clear that they understand traditional structures and know how to work with them properly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does a restoration take?
Most furniture pieces take two to six weeks. Windows and doors usually take two to eight weeks, depending on the condition of the piece and the availability of materials.
Do you work on site or in the workshop?
Both. Every project is different, so we choose the most suitable approach based on the work required. Some projects are completed entirely on site or in our workshop, while others require a combination of both.
What woods do you work with?
We work with a wide range of woods, from traditional Finnish species such as pine, spruce, birch and oak to more specialised and exotic timbers. The choice of wood depends on the project, its intended use and the character of the piece. When a project calls for something less common, we can source suitable specialty and exotic woods to meet the customer’s needs.
Do you take on custom furniture?
Yes. We design and make custom furniture and other bespoke wooden pieces to suit the customer’s needs, space and preferences. Each piece is made individually, so the timeline depends on the complexity of the project, materials and our current workload. Smaller projects may take a few weeks, while larger or more detailed commissions can take several months. We’ll discuss the expected schedule with you before the work begins.
How is pricing handled?
Pricing depends on the scope, materials and complexity of each project. Once we have a clear understanding of the work involved, we provide an estimate or quotation before the project begins. For larger projects, materials and part of the estimated labour cost may be invoiced in advance, with the remaining balance divided into stages as the work progresses. Any significant changes or additional work are discussed with the customer before proceeding.
Can you match an existing piece?
Yes. We can reproduce or complement existing furniture, joinery and architectural details while respecting the original design, proportions, materials and construction. Depending on the project, we can also match wood species, profiles, finishes and signs of age to ensure the new work sits naturally alongside the original.
